Happy bad behaviour night

View Article  Richmond Street Art exhibition (seriously)!

Walking through Marble Hill Park last Sunday I stumbled on a 'Street Art' exhibition poster. I followed the directions and ended up at the Old Stables by, I think, Orleans house. Was this some great exhibition that had somehow passed me by? Would it have Faile, Dface or Arofish rocking the walls?

Well, in a word, no.

It was great space with very little in it. There were some articles and pictures from websites on one wall. A list of all the pizza's and KFC's that had been consumed putting together the exhibition occupied another wall. Reading the exhibition blurb it became clear that it was part of an art course where two 'professional' graffiti writers were sharing their skills with the art students. The two remaining walls had pieces on - one by the professionals and one by the students. I don't want to be unkind here so lets just say it wasn't hard to work out which one was done by the professionals. They had done a great reworking of the view from the top of Richmond Hill which is often quoted as being the most painted scene in London and is subject to a preservation order. And it was really very good. Here's a section  of it - I'll put the whole thing up on artofthestate in the next few days. Excuse me if I don't put up the students wall....

View Article  City Glow, Mountain Whisper

Anybody passing through Gloucester Road tube station over the last few months can't failed to have noticed Chiho Aoshima's fantastic work running along the entire lenght of the platform. After a recent train delay I finally got round to taking some snaps.

View Article  It's a bit early but...

...I was amazed that this picture of a firework display even came out half recognisable as I had to hand hold the camera steady for two seconds to take it.

More stencil art found on a recent walk around Shoreditch. Artist unknown.

You think you've found them all then another pops up right there in front of you.

View Article  Joe Strummer RIP

I might be wrong on two counts here but a). I think this paste up is of Joe Strummer and b). I think it's by Jef Aerosol. As ever I'm happy to be corrected!

And yes I've been making the picture black and white and leaving just one part in it's original colour again.

More street art found near Great Eastern Street - artist unknown - looks like a multi layered stencil pasted up.

Anyone walking around Brick Lane / Spitalfields in recent months can't have failed to notice these Discreet birds appearing everywhere. This is my personal favourite in a side road. Any more info greatly appreciated.

Sad to say it but Dface Death and Glory closes shortly. There will be a load of new pics from the show up on artofthestate in the next few days

View Article  Mighty Mo

Ok I got it wrong - these monkeys are by Mighty Mo and the face is by LondonFrontLine. Thanks to S for pointing out the error of my ways. This has to be my favourite one found so far - I'll post a picture of the whole wall along with some Eskimo work at a later date.

View Article  New World Odor

Obey's New World Order paste up found near Dface's Death And Glory show. I got Obey's 'Supply and Demand' book recently and it's an amazing body of work. The price is steep but anyone who has seen a copy in the flesh will know why.

Dface's show is still on - get down there if you haven't been yet!

View Article  Einstein a go go

No doubt timed to coincide with the mass of people heading to Dface's show who was responsible for slapping this up between Liverpool Street and Brick Lane on Thursday 12th October?

There's a lack of outright political graffiti in London but this one just says what it needs to. Found in Westbourne Park.

View Article  Battersea Power Station

The China Power Station exhibition is in the old Battersea Power Station which has been slowly decaying for years. The centre of the building has been completely removed but on each side there are levels of long corridors where the exhibition is held. At £5 to get in its well worth it for having a look around the power station alone.

View Article  Theres always one bad apple...

...but in this case there's going to be several thousand. As part of the China Power Station exhibition in Battersea Power Station an artist has filled a load of cages with slowly decaying apples. The exhibition runs for a while yet and the stench is already getting fierce. If you want to see it go soon!

View Article  Too many shows....

Too much art in one day. First I went to the China Power Station exhibition at the Battersea Power station (mainly to have a look around the power station to be honest), then I went to Lazinc to see the Antony Micallef show. Next up was Dface's rocking and heaving solo show followed finally by three decades of Blek Le Rat at the Leonard Street Gallery. And then I drank too much beer.

Anyway I'll post up some pictures from the shows later but in the meantime heres a piece of Blek Le Rat from the streets around Leonard Street and that balloon dog from the Dface show.

A new futuristic building in London - it can only be the work of the Mayor Of London again. This pod is at the base of the London Development Agency near Southwark

Thursday 12th October sees the opening night of two new shows:

Blek Le Rat ( invite needed - contact Mike Snelle) - Leonard Street Gallery, 73 Leonard Street, Shoreditch. EC2A 4QS.

Opens for general viewing the day after (check on mikesnelle.com for more details) and showcases stencil work from the past three decades.

Dface Death and Glory, The Old Truman Brewery, Brick Lane, E1 6QL (see the invite on dface.co.uk ).

Should be a good evening!

View Article  Finally, modern art we can all appreciate

I sneaked this view of the new installation in the Turbine Hall of Tate Modern. Well to be honest it wasn't that difficult to take the picture but it sounds more exciting.

There seems to be three massive slides of varying heights - they even have the run off at the end. Surely Health and Safety will ban us going down the big one? I hope that they get a few more lifts in the building 'cos I'm cancelling my Alton Towers* annual pass if I can ride this baby.

* well I might if I had ever had one.

View Article  District Line Disrupted Again

Looking like an advanced graffiti training school this is one of two tube trains sitting on top of a building near Liverpool Street (todays lessons are likely to include 'whole car pieces' and 'working at height').

Serial (as in they have previous) graffiti writers Tox, Dist and Zombie appear on the front of the carriage if you look carefully.

View Article  Street art just got a new capital

Think London, Melbourne or New York is the capital of street art? Well just recently Stavanger, Norway laid seroius claims to that title. As part of numusic Eelus, Dface, Nick Walker, Word to Mother and more came to the town and hit it up hard by the look of Numusic's Flickr photostream. There's a mass of quality work there including Norways very own Dolk. Check out nuart too....

I think this was also featured in the Pictures On Walls book but when I stumbled upon it it was being strangely lit by the sun reflecting from the windows opposite.

View Article  I love the smell of Montana in the morning

There's a mass of quality graffiti under the M3 near Hanworth/Feltham, walls and walls of it. It used to be the case that anything good got obliterated but now some pieces seem to be lasting quite well if they deserve the respect of other writers. Some of the walls are truly massive but this short wall piece just stood out so well. More soon

View Article  We're so gritty, oh so gritty - we're vacant

Anybody else noticed that the backdrop for the titles of the BBC programme the Dragon's Den is that glorious messed up wall of graf near Hoxton Square? No doubt the shows editors thought it would make the Dragon's look kinda tough as they strut in front of it in their Monday best. Far from threatening I keep thinking they are about to burst into a rousing chorus of "We're off to see the Wizard".
